F18 Worlds Report

It’s all over - done and dusted. For Goodall Design, the 2014 F18 World Championships was a success, even though it didn’t go exactly to plan.

For the third year running, a Goodall C2 won the Youth World Championships with the USA boys, Taylor Reiss and Mathew Whitehead. These boys where in the prime seat to win the regatta before having “bad day at the office” on the last day.

The C2 showed its all-around performance, winning 7 of the 15 races in a range of conditions, more than any other design.

Patrick Demesmaeker won his first race at a World Championships winning, race 2 in a soft 6 to 8 knot breeze. The USA Youth Team dominated the windier conditions on day 3, with 2 second places and a win.

The hard luck story of the Ashby-Goodall combination clearly won the last 2 days, winning 4 of the last 5 races. This result was a dead rubber as they had missed the previous day due to hull damage which put them out of the regatta contention.

The week was not all about results; it was about the F18 fleet; food, friends and having a good time. Food and drinks supplied by the club where the key ingredient to keeping sailors around after the days racing to share a laugh and help each other in the boat park.

This positivity was reflected in the Sailors Forum held by the class association. The future of the class will be only as strong as the commitment from the sailors, manufactures and association management. The meeting showed the class and the manufactures are all committed to maintaining a stable class platform for members to compete and invest in. The future of the F18 is strong.

Finally the Balleyholm Yacht Club deserves and big thanks you. Not only did they put on possibly the best F18 World Championships we have ever attended, but a number of their members went above and beyond to help out the Goodall team. So thank you all.

A key initiative from the association was the appointment of Jasper van Staveren in the position of media officer. His high level photos have been splashed around the internet for the last week and there are some selected ones below.
